Clark County public administrator arrested for murder in killing of Las Vegas reporter

UPDATED:

Police have arrested Clark County Public Administrator Robert Telles on suspicion of murder in the killing of veteran Las Vegas reporter Jeff German.

Telles was arrested by the LVMPD Wednesday night and booked into Clark County Detention Center.

While police have not publicly commented on the arrest, an event number listed in an arrest log matches the one used by LVMPD in press releases on the homicide case.

Las Vegas Review-Journal Executive Editor Glenn Cook made a statement,

“The arrest of Robert Telles is at once an enormous relief and an outrage for the Review-Journal newsroom. We are relieved Robert Telles is in custody and outraged that a colleague appears to have been killed for reporting on an elected official. Journalists can’t do the important work our communities require if they are afraid a presentation of facts could lead to violent retribution. We thank Las Vegas police for their urgency and hard work and for immediately recognizing the terrible significance of Jeff’s killing. Now, hopefully, the Review-Journal, the German family and Jeff’s many friends can begin the process of mourning and honoring a great man and a brave reporter. Godspeed, Jeff.

The LVMPD will be hosting a press conference on Thursday at 10 a.m with more information.

Las Vegas police say they were serving search warrants Wednesday in connection with the killing of a veteran news reporter.

LVMPD said in a statement they were serving warrants related to the homicide of Jeff German.

A spokesperson declined to provide any further information when contacted by News 3, but officers could be seen for hours outside a home belonging to Robert Telles, the Clark County public administrator. The area was cleared by about 2:10 p.m.

A red GMC Yukon SUV was seen being towed out of a driveway. Police had identified a red or maroon GMC Yukon as a suspect vehicle in the case.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal, German's employer, first reported that police were serving a warrant at Telles's home as part of the investigation.

Telles returned to his home in the afternoon, being dropped off and wearing a white jumpsuit or painter's suit. He did not respond as reporters chased after him and asked questions.

German had recently reported on the tumult in Telles's office for the Review-Journal.A spokesman for Clark County declined to comment on Telles' status, and the county administrator's office was closed Wednesday.

Reporting from May included allegations from former employees that Telles created a hostile work environment and had an "inappropriate relationship" with a staffer. There were also accusations of bullying and favoritism.

Telles lost his bid for re-election in the Democratic primary in June, finishing third with about 32.4% of the vote, and he had lashed out at German online.

"Does the @LVRJ know that @JGermanRJ may be doing double duty on their dime?" Telles tweeted on June 17. "Do they know he basically made a veiled threat to make me take down my site with the truth after I already lost the election?"

The tweet includes a screenshot of a text sent by a person labeled Jeff German asking for comment.

"Looking forward to lying smear piece #4 by" German, Telles tweeted the next daywith the hashtag "onetrickpony."

"I think he's mad that I haven't crawled into a hole and died."

German was found stabbed to death on Saturday outside his home on Bronze Circle, near Tenaya Way and Vegas Drive, according to LVMPD.

Police released images of a suspect wearing a large straw hat and orange shirt and said he was seen potentially casing the area.

Video was later released of a suspect vehicle, described as a red or maroon GMC Yukon SUV with chrome handles, a sunroof and a luggage rack, and said they believe the attack took place on Friday.

A shot of Telles's home posted on Google Street View shows a red GMC Yukon parked in the driveway. An SUV matching LVMPD's description was towed from Telles's home Wednesday afternoon.

On Wednesday evening, police arrested Telles. News 3 is working to gather more information.
