How many Super Bowls have the Washington Commanders won?
The Washington Commanders, previously known as the Washington Redskins, is one of the oldest teams in NFL history. Founded by George Preston Marshall in 1932 as the Boston Braves, the team changed its name to Redskins when it relocated to Washington in 1937. The name Redskins was seen as controversial for many years. In 2020, as a result of a lot of pressure from NFL and team sponsors, the team rebranded to the Washington Football Team and later, changed it to the Washington Commanders in 2022.
The Commanders won a couple of NFL Championships in 1937 and 1942. They finished as league runner-up four times, losing the 1936, 1940, 1943, and 1945 title games. The Commanders enjoyed a 10-year span of continued success. They went to six championship games, winning twice. There was a lull in the middle, but they rose again in the 1980s.
During the 80s, the Commanders won three Super Bowls. They went to four Super Bowls during that period, winning three. Since then, however, the Commanders have struggled to reach the postseason. After the win in 1991, the Washington-based team have won their division only four times and have been to the playoffs only seven times.
The Commanders last made the playoffs in 2020 with a losing record of 7-9. Half of Washington’s postseason appearances have come off of fewer than 10 regular season wins. Their streak of more than 30 years without winning more than 10 games in a single regular season is the longest in NFL history. The Commanders lost in the Wild Card round against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
